"Mommy, Don't Worry."
by Olivia Siqueiros

As the little girl stepped into the confinement of the white room, she noticed many strange things. There where 2 beds. 1 TV. and many funny looking Gizmos. Gripping her fathers hand in fear of this new room. She blankly looked up at him and asked," Daddy, Where's mama?" He didn't know exactly what to say, as tears filled his eyes. Looking down at this spitting image of his wife. He didn't know how to tell her, her mama was dying of cancer. As the thoughts raced through his over-packed mind, he still didn't know what to say. "Mama is sleeping baby," he said in the softest voice he could find. He didn't want her to hear the shakiness in his voice. Nor did he want her to feel any pain.

As they walked over to the bed where mom lay motionless, he picked the little girl up and leaned her over to kiss her mother. As the girl leaned in she realized something. Mama looked different. For some odd reason her mama looked like she was sick. Her eyes were weary, she had ghost like skin, and her lips looked chapped.

This new thought floated through the little girls mind like a soft parade. She kissed her mothers cheek feeling the coolness of it all. The little girl looked back at her dad and asked, " Is mama sick?". He looked at his wife, then back at his daughter. Tears falling slowly, but surely. Should he tell her? Should he tell his little girl she will be motherless in a matter of days, perhaps hours. NO!! He couldn't! As he looked back down at the little girl, the doctor came in, almost as a relief to the father as to not answer his daughters question.

As the doctor pulled the man aside, he let go of his daughters hand. They walked to the entrance of the room and began to talk, keeping his eye on his little girl who was still in visible sight. The doctor began to tell the husband of his wife's condition and the asurity of his wife's passing on. As he was being told all of this he turned and looked at his daughter and began to break down in tears. He couldn't take it, he finally broke down into sobbing tears. As the little girl turned back to see her father in great distress, she ran over to him and hugged him. He could feel her heart beat on his leg, her soft innocent heart beat.

Thinking not only of his wife but of his daughter as well, and everything his family meant to him, he picked her up and walked back over to the wife. " Why do you cry daddy?", she asked in the sweetest voice. Taking a deep breath, and digging deep inside himself he said,"Mamas sick".

She looked at him almost as if she already knew. Then looking back at her mom, she knew why her mom felt so cold and looked the way she did. Turning back to her dad, she wiped a tear and told him," Daddy, I love you." hearing these words of love he began to feel a bit better. He then knew, that the little girl understood her mom was sick. She knew.

As visiting hours came to an end and everyone began to say their goodbyes, father and daughter took hold of each others hand and walked out. The little girl feeling as if her goodbye was not good enough let go of her fathers tight grip, ran back into the room, she starred down at the most beautiful sight. She looked at her mom for a long moment. Her dad watching patiently at the door, and listening. The little girl leaned into to her mom and said, "Don't worry Mommy, I will take care of Daddy." The little girl gave her mom's hand a soft kiss and left with her dad.

The next day as visiting hours started, they where stopped by the doctor. He had this faint look to him a and said calmly, " I'm sorry sir. ... " There was a long pause. "Your wife didn't make it through the night." Hearing this the father broke down and fell to his knees, the little girl also hearing the devastating news ran into the room where mother once lay. She was gone! Where was she?! The father rushing in and picking up his sobbing daughter, held her close. Feeling the love they had for each other, they hugged tightly. They where by themselves now. It was just the 2 of them now. They would now have to adapt to this new life they where both about to go through.

Leaving the hospital the little girl turned to her dad and said," Daddy, we are going be ok". Looking back at this angelic face and her beautiful blue eyes, He said gently," yes baby we will".
